Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I submit an original manuscript to Manuscript Central?
A. Format your manuscript following the guidelines in the Review Format PDF.  Sign up for an account and login at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/embs-ieee.  In your author center, click on "Submit First Draft of a New Manuscript".  Follow the instructions listed, ad fill out the online forms.

Q. How do I submit my revised manuscript to Manuscript Central?
A.  Once the first review has been entered for a manuscript a copy of the manuscript is sent to your Author Center with the R1 extension (e.g. 00101-2001.R1). Return to your Author Center and first view the comments of the Associate Editor and reviewers. Enter your responses in the appropriate boxes and click the Submit button.  Please note that there are two boxes.  The comments in the associate editor box will only go to the associate editor box.  If you do not provide comments in the box for the reviewers, they will not be able to see them. Next, in the same area click on the title of your manuscript. You will be prompted to upload your revised manuscript into Manuscript Central.  Follow all the steps and make sure that you select the "View proof" button.  Only after looking at the proof will you be presented with a submit button.  The manuscript is not submitted unless you press this button.  You will get a confirmation email.

Q. Can I submit a manuscript that's been rejected?
A. Once a manuscript has been rejected, the review process stops for that particular paper. If you and your colleagues wish to re-submit the paper it will be considered a new manuscript and will start the review process from the beginning. Please include, as a supporting document, a file explaining your responses to the previous reviews.

Q. What format should I use for my manuscript in Manuscript Central?
A.  You can submit in MS Word, or PDF format.  All files will be converted to PDF when you upload them.

Q. Where do I find the IEEE Copyright Form and where should I send it?
A.  The copyright form can be found on our Forms page. Once you have completed this form, fax it to the Editor in Chief's office.

Q. What other forms are required?
A.  Besides the IEEE Copyright Form, TBME requires the Author Consent form, which can also be found on our Forms page

Q. How can I determine the status of my manuscript?
A.  When you log into Manuscript Central and access your Author Center you will see a status bar with the title of all manuscripts you've submitted to Manuscript Central. On the right of the bar is the Processing Status & Associate Editor indicator. This shows where your manuscript is in the review process.  A status of "With Associate Editor" means that your manuscript is being reviewed.

For Reviewers

Q.   How do I enter my review of a manuscript?
A.  Your Reviewer Center contains a list of all manuscripts you are responsible for reviewing. At the far right under the Corresponding Author's name is a button named "Review".  Clicking this button will bring you to a screen entitled "Instructions for Reviewers". Follow the prompts given and enter your scores and review of the manuscript where indicated.

Q.  What is the difference between the different boxes for the comments?
A.  There are two boxes that can be used for comments in the review form.  The comments in the first box will only go to the associate editor.  If there are comments that you want the author to see they should be typed/copied into the comments for author box.

Q. I want to upload a review I have formatted in Word or other word processor.
A. You can upload a Word or PDF file.  In the box for author comments, please put "see uploaded file"

For Associate Editors

Q.  How do I enter a new reviewer's name into Manuscript Central?
A. When you log into Manuscript Central and go to your Associate Editor Center you will see a list of options numbered 1 through 10. Option #8 is User Administration. Select this option and complete the information for the new reviewer in the given form. IMPORTANT: At the bottom of the form be sure to select "Yes" when asked if this person is a reviewer. Also, don't forget to click the "Add User" button at the bottom of the screen. This is how Manuscript Central will know to enter this person into the database and generate the necessary letters.

Q.   I get reminder notices for late reviews, do I need to do something?
A. Yes.  You can formulate an email to the reviewer asking about the status of the review.  Notices are currently sent automatically to the reviewers once the deadline for the review has passed.

Q. One of my reviewers complains about the quality of the figures or equations, what do I do?
A. In this case the authors will have to upload a new version of the manuscript.  Please send an email to office@tbme.embs.org with a request.  Make sure you include the manuscript number.

Q.  I want to look at a review I did previously, but it is not in my center anymore.
A. When you go to your associate editor center, you will see the main menu on your left and some search boxes on your right.  You can enter searches in those boxes to locate previously reviewed manuscripts.  If you leave all the boxes empty, it will show you a list of all the reviews you managed.
