    Distortion Distribution of Neural Spike Train Sequence Matching with Optogenetics

    Optogenetics, named “Breakthrough of the Decade” by Science Magazine, gives scientists the ability to control neurons with pulses of light. This technique gives scientists a precise tool for probing the function of the brain, and is expected to deliver revolutionary therapies for neurological conditions. We consider signal processing for optogenetics: given a target firing pattern, we design an illumination sequence, and if the target can’t be achieved, we measure the distortion between the target and the actual sequence. These results establish mathematical limits for the technique, and could help neuroscientists design optogenetic experiments.
